Why Learn Linux?

Linux is widely used in the server space and is used by 4.3%1 of users in the desktop space and is predicted to gain users when the "long awaited" SteamOS releases an ISO for gamers to install on their own machines.

Many users who switch to Linux from Windows and MacOS, go for GUI options and software without paying much attention to the TTY and terminal based things. This means that when something goes wrong, they don't know what to do when things go wrong. I was watching a clip from Brodie Robertson's podcast, TechOverTea where the guest, UÄŸur Erdem Seyfi and Brodie spoke about new users having a non user friendly error message in a GUI popup when something went wrong. The error they mentioned was package manager lock, but this made me think about the fact that new users just use what they are used to (GUIs) and don't look at the TTY.

Across a series of blosts (for the unaware, this means blog + posts), I am going to go through the TTY, explaining the basics from package managers to basic commands such as copying, moving and using the terminal full stop. There is so much to learn which is why many people put off learning Linux but a lot of the basics are very easy to understand.

This is going to be a great journey. I'll see you in the next one in this series.

This was blost 3/100 for 100DaysToOffload.
